Understanding CAO Points
If you’re preparing for the Leaving Cert, you’ve probably heard a lot about CAO points. But how does the system actually work?
CAO (Central Applications Office) points determine entry into most undergraduate courses in Ireland (the 4 year long course you do in college after the Leaving Cert).
Your Leaving Cert grades are converted into points, and your best six subjects are counted to give a total score out of 625.
Each course has a CAO points requirement, which changes yearly based on demand. The higher your points, the wider your range of college options.

Using The Christopire to Get the
Points You Want
Understanding CAO points is one thing, but achieving them is where The Christopire Flashcards come in.
Our flashcards are designed around real past papers, covering keywords, definitions, quotes, and concepts that appear in the Leaving Cert exams every year. By revising with short, focused sessions, you can strengthen memory and recall without feeling overwhelmed.
Here’s how they help:
- Build confidence gradually. You don’t need to cram. A few flashcards daily keep knowledge fresh.
- Make study less daunting. Instead of staring at long notes, you review bite-sized cards that target what examiners actually ask.
- Aim for H1s. Active recall (the method our flashcards use) is proven to help students retain information more effectively, leading to higher grades and, ultimately, higher CAO points.
Whether you’re aiming for 400 points or 600, using The Christopire Flashcards alongside the CAO Points Calculator gives you both a plan and the tools to reach it.
